Welcome to a new academic year at The University of Iowa!

I have been President for a year now, but I am still learning wonderful new things about the accomplishments and traditions of this great university, I am still meeting many tremendous members of the University community for the first time, and I am still discovering all the exciting cultural, recreational, and civic opportunities that the Iowa City community has to offer. But I’m also looking ahead, as I know you are, to the beginning of a new year—anticipating new challenges and the promise of new learning and discovery. You are an important part of what lies before us, and I can’t wait to join you in the great year to come.

Welcome Week is a great time to learn about what the UI community has to offer or reconnect with your University if you’re a returning student. But it’s also about having a lot of fun. Through providing you with a host of educational and entertaining activities, we want you to know that we’re glad you’re here, and we want you to enjoy the community that is uniquely Iowa. We thank our University and community sponsors for their support of this opening celebration.

As you know, you are entering or returning to The University of Iowa at a historic time. The Flood of 2008 tested—and continues to test—our community and our resolve. The response of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, friends, community members, and even strangers has been amazing. Thanks to the dedication, generosity, and sheer labor of thousands of members of the UI family, we are overcoming our challenges and moving forward. While there are still buildings undergoing repair and renovation here on campus, you are part of a University community that is stronger than ever.

Welcome to the University of Iowa, Welcome Week!

On behalf of the University of Iowa Student Government and the student body, it is a pleasure to be able to greet you to the University.

Welcome Week is a remarkable time to discover the University, meet new friends, get involved, and explore the endless opportunities that are offered during your College experience.

I encourage you all to get to know the faculty, staff and students during this unique occasion.

I would like to also thank the many sponsors of the Welcome Week, and acknowledge the tireless hours put into it by many individuals in order to make this event a success; so whether you are a freshman new to the University, or in your last semester with us, join us for the festivities, have fun, and become a part of the University of Iowa community and the Hawkeye tradition!
